The main character in this book is Fabian and he is 10 years old. He has recently moved to town and doesn’t know that many kids in his class or on his hockey team yet. And hockey, well, he mostly plays because Dad wants him to. Dad was a good hockey player himself way back when.
Fabian also worries about his mom, who mostly stays in bed and wants quiet around her. It’s lucky that he has his big sister, Vickan. She already has her hands full with a number of projects though, and now she is trying to save the City Park. The City actually wants to build a shopping mall in the middle of the park, something Vickan does not agree with.
In the middle of Fabian’s messy life Magda appears and opens a candy store on his block. She invites Fabian into the store and suddenly he has somebody to talk to. And there is something strange with her candy. It makes Fabian and others who eat from it act very strangely …
Maud Mangold is a master at finding the right balance between the ordinary and the magical.
A perfect read-aloud-book with delightful characters and much drive.
