Affection resembles nothing else on the market. An entirely black novel as hard as a rock, and impossible to stop thinking about.
“When I was twelve years old a girl died at a party. Or it might have been a party. It was in the borderlands so I don’t remember what we called it. Whatever it was, it didn’t turn out to be any kind of celebration. And I think that now afterwards, few people would call it a party.”
Kate Mess is sixteen years old. For several years she has lived a fast life with boys, alcohol and drugs. To not have to think, and to get rid of the ghosts from the past, she moves to her sister in another town. But the old ghosts keep popping up, especially Ali. Ali who was Kate’s best friend for ten years. These days they almost never see each other, but they were inseparable until that bad thing happened when they were twelve. When Zara was found dead in the freezer.
Affection is a novel as dark as the night, and entirely impossible to let go of. The characters stay in your mind for a long, long time. At first sight you can, as a reader, believe that everything is very simple: It’s obvious that Kate is a real loser. But then the story unfolds and comes full circle, and suddenly you realize that life can be so many things.
