Alice moves with her family to a charming old house in the country. Or, as Alice tells it: a disgusting, old, dilapidated mansion, much too far from her boyfriend Leo and her friends in town. How can anybody want to live here?

When Alice turned on the webcam, Leo was already there, on the small screen. She turned all warm inside when she saw him. The picture wasn’t good, but actually a little better than the last time. She leaned forward, so he would be able to see her silver heart really well.
Leo smiled.
Nice! he wrote.
Thanks, Alice wrote. Did you get a haircut?
Leo nodded. The picture jerked and shook.
It didn’t turn out like I wanted it to, he wrote.
But it’s nice, Alice responded.
Leo made an ugly face. Then he looked into the camera again, and suddenly he looked really serious.
Who is that? he wrote.
Alice didn’t get it.
Who is who? she wrote.
The girl, of course! Leo responded.
Alice laughed. She thought Leo was joking.
Yeah, who could that be? she wrote. I think her name is… um, what was it again… Alice!
But Leo wasn’t laughing. He shook his head and stared intensely into the camera. But not at Alice, but at something kind of next to her.
I mean the girl behind you, he wrote.

They hardly have time to move in before a lot of strange things start happening. Suddenly, the telephones and the internet quit working, and Alice’s TV turns itself on. Her alarm clock seems to take on a life of its own and shows 19:29, even though that’s totally wrong. And what is it with that rare butterfly that shows up everywhere and then disappears just as quickly? It feels like it wants to tell Alice something, but what? And who is the mysterious girl Alice’s little brother says he has seen in the house…
