“Being Charlie Schulman’s Dad” is the name of a popular blog where Alex Schulman writes about his life as a dad. 250,000 readers a week follow this blog, where the most popular feature is ”the conversations” that Alex has with his seven-month-old daughter, Charlie.
The most incredible thing about Charlie is that she not only formulates her thoughts into full sentences, she is also great at manipulating her dad. Their blog conversations became the starting point for the picture book, The Poop Party, wich
is the first book about Nikki, Charlie’s alias.
One morning when Dad changes his daughter’s diaper, he finds that she has not pooped. He wonders why, but gets an evasive answer. The following day there is still no poop, and not the day after that. Dad gets worried and demands that Nikki tells him what’s going on. Nikki answers that she is “saving up.” Dad wants to know for what, but she does not want to specify in any other way than to cunningly state, ”If I save it, I’ll still have it.” With her charm, her winks and her baby poses, she sets the agenda, and keeps Dad out of the loop. After several weeks’ worried checking for poop and many airings without diapers, the inevitable happens, there is a magnificent poop fest!
Children will love Nikki because she is clever and funny and because a poop fest, in this format, is always irresistible!
And all the situations will feel familiar to parents!
Emma Adbåge’s pictures are genuinely charming; The body language of Nikki and Dad generates dynamics that builds expectations.
