Vita Olson is seven years old and the only one in her class who hasn’t yet lost her front teeth.
She lives with her mom in a white house where the bottom floor houses Amore Pizza Parlor. The smell of pizza makes her think of Dad, who moved back to Italy and married a new woman. Now they are having a baby. And to think that Vita, more than anything, wants a little brother.
Suddenly, one night, she hears a howling from the pizza parlor downstairs, and a few days later she catches sight of a glowing eye in the dark stairway. Next time there is a full moon, she is convinced a werewolf has moved in.
Kerstin Lundberg Hahn has found a tone where she describes exactly how it is to be seven, lose your teeth, ponder the big questions about how it all fits together, as well as the strong emotional expressions that are so often dismissed by stressed, emotionally absent parents.
Add to this Maria Nilsson Thore’s fantastic illustrations which thoroughly intensify the feelings in the book. It is a perfect read-out-loud book, depicting excitement, seriousness, and much joy.
