Christina Wahldén has worked as a journalist since 1990, and is now crime reporter for Svenska Dagbladet, a leading Swedish daily.
Her books are largely based on real cases and reports she has written for the paper and then re-worked. A much publicized series of gang rapes led to the book Kort kjol/Short Skirt, her first book. The police investigation of the murder of a young Kurdish woman got her thinking about an issue that became a novel Heder/Honour, her third book. What makes Christina Wahldén’s books so unique is that she never underestimates her public. She has faith in the readers of her stories. Dares to let young people themselves solve some of the puzzle. She allows her characters to have secrets of their own, which might be revealed later. Just as in real life.
“What takes me the most time is working out the actual plot. But that is most fun too. That’s when I have daydreams about my story, about the characters in it. I think about what sort of people they are, what is going to become of them... I try to have a basic framework for the story ready when I start writing. With a good beginning and a decent ending. Then it is really a question of filling in the gap. Although it is by no means certain that the story actually follows my plan!”
